How to Read Your Gas Meter


Gas Dial Meter

Reading your gas dial meter isn’t as difficult as it looks. Just follow these simple tips:

  • Please note that the dials next to each other rotate in opposite directions
  • If the pointer falls between two numbers always choose the lower of the two numbers
  • If the pointer is shown between 9 and 0 choose 9
  • Completely ignore the largest dial and any red dials
  • Ensure you read the dials from  left to right  

 

Gas Digital Meter (Imperial Meter)

  • Read only the white digits
  • Ignore any numbers after a decimal point
  • Ignore any numbers in red

 

5 Digit Digital Gas Meter

  • Make a note of all of the numbers before the decimal point including zeros. Ignore any other digits

 

How to Read Your Electricity Meter


Electric Dial Meter

Reading your electric dial meter isn’t as difficult as it looks. Just follow these simple tips:

  • Please note that the dials next to each other rotate in opposite directions
  • Read the black dials from left to right
  • If the pointer falls between two numbers always choose the lower of the two numbers
  • If the pointer is shown between 9 and 0 choose 9
  • Ignore any red dials

 

Single Rate Electric Digital Meter

  • Simply read the numbers from left to right and ignore any numbers after a decimal point if one is present.

 

Economy 7 Electric Meter

  • There are two lines, one for low rate and one for normal rate
  • Write down the low rate numbers from left to right ignoring the very last digit
  • Write down the normal rate numbers from left to right ignoring the very last digit

 

Electronic Electric Meter

Electronic meters could be for two systems such as normal and Economy 7.

Your digital meter may show just one or multiple screens. You will need to scroll through to find your reading. Different electronic meters go through the information in different orders. Letters or numbers will come up on the display to show which rate the reading is for.

For example:

  • R1 or R2
  • 1 or 2
  • L or N
  • Low or Normal

For all electronic meters:

  • Ignore the red button.
  • Press the blue button to change the screen display to show what you want.
  • Write down all the numbers from left to right including any zero's.
  • Ignore any numbers after the decimal point or which may be shown in red.
