Smart Meter National Rollout

Smart meters measure the gas and electricity you are using and display this in near real time on a handy portable screen in your home. They also send automatic meter readings to your energy supplier.

Smart meters will be fitted in 26 million homes by 2020 as part of a national rollout. It’s the biggest improvement to our energy system in decades.

Why do we need Smart Meters?

There are a number of benefits for you.

Accurate Bills

Smart meters mean the end of estimated bills. No more having to read the meter or trying to work out your bill.

Imagine buying your weekly shop at the supermarket and instead of paying the correct total you’re given an estimate at the checkout which is more or less than what it should actually be. That’s just not right is it? Then why should you still live with the uncertainty of paying estimated bills?

Save Money

Smart meters make it easier for you to identify the situations where you are using a lot of energy and might want to make changes to reduce it.

If you use the information shown on your smart meter display to help reduce your energy use, you should be able to cut your energy costs.

Our Power’s Smart Meter

Our Power is already rolling out smart meter systems in homes across GB.

The system we install usually includes a gas meter, an electricity meter and a compact In-Home Display unit (IHD) which all work together. The IHD will show you the same information as each meter but because it’s small and compact you can place it in a handy and easily accessible place - on your kitchen worktop for example - so you can refer to it regularly.

So what will the In Home Display tell you?

Your IHD will also show you how much energy you’ve used over the past day, week or month with simple graphs to help you make decisions about where you could cut costs and save money. It will show you the cost of your energy so there should be no surprises when you bill arrives.

For Pay As You Go customers It will show you in near real time how much gas and electricity credit you have left and how long this is likely to last based on the appliances you currently have switched on.

By having a smart meter system in your home our customer service team will be able to read your meter meaning you don’t have to. It will also help us help you as we’ll have the information at the touch of a button should you ever need to contact us about anything concerning your energy supply. There are other features too – such as emergency or friendly credit built in to make sure you never run out of credit during evenings, weekends or on bank holidays…now that’s real peace of mind for you and your family.

If our engineers install the meter for you in your home then they will provide a demonstration of how they work during the installation, however if you have just moved into a home that we supply and the smart meters are already installed then we have made 3 short videos to provide an overview of our Smart Meters and how the In Home Display works for you as a Credit or PAYG customer.
